Description
The water siphon on Ovenden Beck, located to the south of Old Lane Mill, dates from the early to mid-19th century. It is constructed from large gritstone blocks and features a metal cover and grate. The structure includes a raised circle made of large, roughly dressed stone blocks, with an inner circle that has a circular metal cover resembling a cobweb. This covers a deep, stone-lined circular shaft that is fed by water from the north side, and there is a grate over the entrance to prevent debris from the stream from falling into the shaft. The siphon is situated at the south-east corner of a former reservoir, which has now been reduced to a stream. It is an impressive and unusual ancillary building associated with the mill.
