Description

Acre is a late 18th-century laithehouse, with a date inscription of 1837 likely referring to its conversion from a barn. It features coursed square stone and a stone slate roof. The building has two storeys, with a two-bay house to the right of a two-bay barn, and an outshut added to the rear of the right bay.

The house has a central boarded door, with the doorway connected to flanking four-light flat-faced mullion windows by large impost blocks. There are two similar windows above, all with tooled stone surrounds. The barn, now converted to a cottage, has a keyed segmental-arched cart entry on the right, which is blocked and features a later three-light window with a keystone dated. To the left end, there is a chamfered mistal doorway, and above are two two-light windows, one of which is later. The later windows have plain stone surrounds and flat-faced mullions, while the earlier window matches those of the house. The gables have kneelers and ashlar coping, with ridge stacks at the right ends of both the house and barn.

At the rear, the house has one three-light first-floor window, and the barn has a part-blocked opposing mistal doorway. The left return features a diamond owl-hole in the gable. Inside the house, the pantry in the outshut is partly below ground level. The barn contains a large fireplace with a chamfered mantelshelf to the right, and above it is another fireplace with an iron grate. The roof trusses have angle braces and through purlins. At the time of the last survey, the building was in a state of dereliction.
