HALIFAX FREE SCHOOL LANE (North side) Retaining wall and boundary wall at Royal Halifax Infirmary

GV II

Retaining wall and boundary wall. 1892-96. Rockfaced stone with ashlar dressings. Retaining wall, approx. 100m, runs from the lodge (block 11) across the front of the administration block (04). The wall increases in height from left to right with the slope of the site. Chamfered coping topped with a coped balustrade, with dice and ball finials. Boundary wall, to right, approx. 80m long, fronting ward blocks 01 and 02. Chamfered coping formerly topped with a railing, and coped square piers. Plain gateway at right end.
