Description

Lane Top Farmhouse is a house, possibly dating from 1672, although it was likely rebuilt in the early 18th century. A date of 1672 is inscribed on a 19th-century porch to the front. The house is constructed of large, dressed stone, partly watershot, with a stone slate roof. It is two storeys high. The corners are accentuated with quoins, and the gables have coped stones, kneelers, and ball finials at the apex. The plan originally comprised three rooms, with a baffle entry. There are three bays, but quoins marking the junction of the first and second bays suggest that the house may originally have been only two bays wide. The doorway has a square lintel and a chamfered surround, now protected by a later, single-storey, gabled porch which acts as a sun room. To the right of the porch are two windows with chamfered jambs, square lintels, and sills, along with two smaller windows above. All the windows have modern glazing. To the left of the porch, one chamfered mullioned window of two lights survives, although it is lacking its mullion and now blocked. Two stacks are located along the ridge; one, opposite the entrance, is well-dressed and contemporary with the house, while the other has a 19th-century appearance. The right-hand return wall retains two chamfered mullions of two lights, one to each floor.
