Description

Sweet Briar Cottage is a house dating from the early 18th century. It is constructed of watershot masonry with a stone slate roof. Originally, the house comprised two sections, and the right-hand bay appears to be slightly older than the left, as evidenced by the quoins on the front facade. The rear wall of the left-hand bay has been recently rebuilt, exposing a former outshut of the right-hand bay. The south front features double-chamfered mullioned windows of four lights, with one window having been altered from its original four-light design. A mid-20th century porch is located between the windows, covering a 19th-century doorway. The first floor has two chamfered mullioned windows, each with two wide lights. The rear of the house retains a four-light double-chamfered mullioned window on the ground floor. Inside, the housebody contains two spine beams with a deep curve cut back for extra headroom and a stop-chamfer at the end. A half-lap joint is visible, suggesting possible reuse from a former cruck building.
