Description

This is a barn dating from the 17th century, likely the second half of the 17th century, situated approximately 12 metres west of Barn Cottage. The barn is constructed of coursed rubble with timber framing, and has a stone slate roof. It comprises five bays, including an aisle. The corners are defined by quoins. The south front features the aisle only across the left-hand bays. A central cart entry is positioned under the eaves and has a renewed surround with chamfered quoins and a monolithic lintel. To the right of the cart entry are two chamfered arched vents. The aisle on the left side contains a blocked doorway with a chamfered surround, tie-stones, and a deep lintel. There are also two similar vents, an inserted window, and an inserted doorway in the right return. The rear of the barn has a lower roof over the aisle. A central cart entry is quoined, with two chamfered arched vents and a window on the right with a shaped head, a lowered sill, and chamfered jambs with tie-stones. The left and right gables each feature a chamfered arched vent, with an inserted window in the right gable. Inside, doorways with chamfered quoined surrounds and deep lintels are located to either side of the rear cart entry, providing access to the aisles. The frame incorporates jowelled posts on padstones, with braces to wall plates and tie beams. Four roof trusses are present, originally featuring king posts braced to a ridge piece; however, in three trusses, the king post has been cut short to rest on a collar supported by angled braces. The roof also includes large-scantling purlins.
