Description

The Former Sunday School, now used as works, was built between 1882 and 1883 and designed by C. F. L. Horsfall of Leeds. The building is constructed of coursed stone with ashlar dressings and features a Welsh slate and glass roof. The north street facade has a prominent central section that projects forward, featuring two round-headed doorways with moulded ashlar surrounds, which are fitted with plank double doors. Between the doorways are paired Doric columns, and on either side, there are single Doric columns and pilasters that support a decorated entablature. Above the doorways is a central round-headed window with two lights, which is now blocked, flanked by plain pilasters that support a large pediment with a central circular plaque. On either side, there are single round-headed windows with two lights and plain sashes, above which are single rectangular plain plaques, followed by an entablature and a moulded parapet. The outer sections feature paired giant pilasters topped with parapet blocks. Inside, the building has a very unusual wooden roof supported by steel ties, featuring a double hammer beam design with carved bosses and a semi-circular central section that is fully glazed. The building is included for its group value with the former Non-Conformist Chapel to the east, Calder House to the west, and the Sowerby Canal Basin buildings to the south.
