Description

The War Memorial located at The Park is a bronze statue of a soldier in First World War trench kit, created by F. W. Doyle Jones around 1922. The statue stands on a white granite plinth that is approached by three steps. The front of the memorial is inscribed with the words, "ERECTED TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF ELLAND WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 - 1919 'THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE'," and it also includes the names of victims from 1939 to 1945. This remarkably well-crafted statue is imaginatively positioned, overlooking the Calder Valley below Hullen Edge.
