Description

This is an early 18th-century retaining wall and pair of piers forming part of the forecourt at Hopwood Hall. The wall is of substantial stone construction. The pair of piers flank the steps leading to the forecourt, with a further pier to the west. The piers appear to be from the 19th century. The house itself is a good, substantial stone building of three storeys and five windows, with a rusticated ground storey and a segmental pediment on brackets above the entrance door. An eaves cornice runs along the top of the building, above a hipped stone roof. The rear elevation features wide mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights, and a rusticated arch to the central recessed staircase window. The interior of the main house retains original and later 18th-century features, including a staircase with a Chinese fret balustrade, some ceiling decoration, and plain joinery. The building is of group value with Nos. 2 and 4, and with No. 2 King Cross Street.
