Description

Dean House is a large house of 1605, with extensions of 1620, located on Allerton Lane, Allerton. Built by Robert and Susan Dean, the house is constructed of coursed sandstone and gritstone, typical of Halifax architecture. The front has an irregular, triple-gabled design of two storeys. The roof is covered with stone slates and features apex, valley, and kneeler finials, as well as stone gutter spouts. Windows are chamfered mullion and mullion and transome types. A continuous weathered string course runs above the ground floor, raised over the lintel of a four-centred arched doorway. The left-hand gable displays a carved stone panel inscribed with the date 1605 and the initials R D over S, incorporating the cross of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. The right-hand gable features a stone sundial inscribed R 1620 D.
