Description

This is a terrace of twenty-two workers' houses, built in 1857 as part of the Saltaire model village by the architectural firm of Lockwood and Mawson for Titus Salt. The houses are constructed from hammer-dressed stone with a Welsh slate roof. They are two storeys high and generally one bay wide, though the end houses project forward and have two bays, featuring a round-arched doorway and window with an archivolt. The ground floor windows are square-headed and sit on a sill band. The remaining houses each have a simple doorway and a single window to each floor; some have had windows inserted for bathrooms. Some of the houses have been painted. Wooden brackets support the guttering at the end houses, and the roofs are hipped. The return elevations of the end houses are two bays wide. The end houses are more elaborately designed due to their visual prominence on both Caroline Street and Titus Street.
