Description

This is a 17th-century single-aisled barn located 15 metres south of Holden Gate Farmhouse. Built in 1641, it features hammer-dressed stone and a stone slate roof, comprising five bays with quoins. The barn has a centrally-placed gabled porch for cart entry, which includes a semi-circular archway with a chamfered surround. The gable displays a date-stone initialled "TF" and kneelers but lacks coping. Inside the cart-entry, there is a wooden lintel that serves as the tie-beam of a king-post truss with six 'V' struts, and a har-hung door.

Within the re-entrant angle, there are doorways leading to the aisle, featuring composite jambs and stop-chamfered surrounds. The left doorway has a straight lintel, while the right is Tudor-arched. On either side of the porch, there is a weathered plinth and arrow-slit ventilators with arched heads and spandrels. A chamfered Tudor-arched doorway is located at the left-hand end. The gables are coped with kneelers, and the left gable has a finial. The rear of the barn has additional arrow-slits and a projecting porch under a cat-slide roof.

Inside, the outer bays contain king-post trusses with single, nearly vertical struts and straight braces to the ridge, supported by posts with heavily jewelled heads on padstones. These are braced to the tie-beam and arcade plate. A heavy wall-tie features a single curved brace. On either side of the threshing floor, there are modified queen-strut trusses with a collar topped by a short king-post and a curved brace to the ridge. This barn is a remarkable example of 17th-century architecture, showcasing excellent stone detailing and fine timbering.
