Description
Bolling Hall, now a museum, is a large and historically significant building in Bradford, notable for being the earliest in structural origin, having been enlarged from two medieval towers likely dating from the 14th century. The hall is constructed from sandstone and gritstone rubble, with the towers featuring parapet copings and stone slate roofs. The main south front, dating from around 1660, showcases a remarkable variety of window styles, including cross mullioned windows, semi-circular and circular mullioned windows, two canted bays with two storeys of eight lights, and a large hall window with five plus five lights and two transoms. Above the hall window, there is a three-light semi-circular window and a three-light ogee window, along with a Victorian canted bay window adjacent to the right-hand tower. The rear elevation includes projecting wings, with the west wing being the only part of the hall faced with ashlar stone, featuring plain mullioned windows and a possibly reset medieval window with three ogee-headed lights on the top floor. The east wing has mullioned and transomed windows. Inside, the hall features an 18th-century ceiling and a gallery at the rear. One room on the first floor retains vibrant original plasterwork, with broad bands depicting foliage and birds.
