Description

Turkey Mill is a cotton spinning mill that has been converted into a discotheque. It was built in 1797 and was enlarged in the early and later 19th century. The building is constructed of gritstone and features a stone slate roof, forming an H-shaped range.

The right range consists of three storeys and six bays. It has a round-headed wheel arch and two lunettes on the ground floor, with one of the lunettes now serving as a door. The square windows have stone cills and lintels above. There is a taking-in door with interrupted jambs on the first and second floors, and a mid-19th century octagonal chimney that has been reduced in height.

The main range has two storeys, with a third storey added in the early 19th century, and contains thirteen bays. The central entrance is round-arched and quoined, with blocked windows on the ground floor. The first floor features small square openings with stone cills and lintels, and there is a date plaque to the left of centre inscribed 'John Town 1822'. The second floor has recessed bays defined by pilasters and taller windows. The building has plain gutter brackets, shaped kneelers, and coping, with a bellcote on the left gable.

There is a range to the left that is at right angles to the main structure and was in a state of disrepair and collapse at the time of the resurvey. Additionally, there is a free-standing two-storey block to the left, measuring 2 x 1 bay.

The mill was water-powered and was purchased in 1822 by John Town, who enlarged it for use as a paper mill and adapted it for steam power.
