Description
The Church of St Oswald, built between 1890 and 1902 by architects F H and F Healy, is a sandstone "brick" church featuring ashlar dressings and 14th-century details. It has a tall nave, aisles, transepts, and a shallow chancel, with triple gabled east and west ends. A north-east tower adjoins the transept. The aisle windows consist of three mullioned flat arched lights, giving them a somewhat domestic character. The main east and west windows showcase impressive curvilinear tracery. There is a gabled north-east porch, and the lofty tower includes shallow buttresses at the bell stage and an octagonal turret. The broached spire, which has lucarnes, significantly enhances the townscape.
