Description
The railings, wall, gate piers, and gates flanking the road in front of Gilstead Methodist Chapel were built around 1904. They are made of hammer-dressed stone and ashlar, as well as cast and wrought iron. The low wall is topped by a long stretch of railings with hammer head terminals on the bars, arranged on three levels that follow the slope of the road. The railings end in a feature with a triple, depressed elliptical arch, reminiscent of the style of Rennie Mackintosh. The square ashlar gate piers have ball finials, and there is a matching gate, along with another similar gate at a higher level. The nearby chapel, also dated 1904, likely coincides with the construction of these railings. This is considered the best example of Art Nouveau ironwork in the parish.
