Description
The Two Rise Locks with overflow channel at Dowley Gap were built around 1773 by John Longbottom, following a design by James Brindley. These locks feature large dressed stone retaining walls and have three rebates for gates. There are pedimented ramps leading to the higher lock, with a flight of ten stone steps on either side. The overflow channel on the north side is supported by hammer-dressed stone retaining walls. This structure is part of a series that culminates in the Five-Rise Locks.
