Description

This is a large warehouse and chambers block dated 1883, located at 8-20 Manor Row, with additional sections extending to Broad Street. Built in sandstone ashlar, it represents a late form of warehouse/office design characteristic of the "Little Germany" area. The building was designed by Rhodes Calvert and comprises an 18-bay range on Manor Row. The ground floor is tall, featuring massive piers that support an entablature. Sill bands mark the upper floors, and large block brackets adorn the main cornice and parapet. Doorways are distinguished by substantial console brackets supporting pediments. The first-floor windows have stilted cambered arches that rise from an impost string, while the second-floor windows have flat consoles above them. The northern corner of the block is splayed and features a single window, with a plain return elevation. The building occupies a prominent hillside location in conjunction with Manor Buildings.
