Description

The building at 38-44 Upper Allerton Lane comprises a row of cottages, with number 38 likely dating from the mid-18th century. The remaining cottages were constructed as an extension, likely around 1800, replacing a former farmhouse. Number 38 is built of coursed gritstone with flush quoins, saddlestones, and kneelers supporting a stone slate roof. It features two- and three-light square mullion windows set in squared surrounds, along with a squared jamb doorway. The other cottages are built of sandstone “brick,” with number 44 being slightly taller. All have stone slate roofs with corniced chimneys. The remaining cottages have single and two-light square mullion windows in squared surrounds, and number 44 has a sill band. They also feature squared jamb doorways.
