Description

Numbers 3 to 11, known as Esholt Old Hall, is a complex building consisting of a 16th-century section partially rebuilt by the Sherbourne family, and a taller 2-storey and attic portion constructed in the mid 17th century by the Calverley family. Later alterations in the late 18th and early 19th centuries resulted in the subdivision of the building into tenements. The Hall is constructed from large blocks of coursed gritstone with stone slate roofs, featuring saddlestones to the gables. The 2-storey section (Numbers 3 to 7) has a circa 1800 hipped roof. The 17th-century gabled section features five-light and four-light chamfered mullioned windows with drip moulds, along with a four-centred arched doorway within a chamfered surround. The earlier 16th-century section retains some chamfered mullioned windows (two, three, and four lights) with drip moulds, although some have been replaced with circa 1800 square mullioned windows. A circa 1800 gabled stone porch serves as the entrance to Number 3. The rear elevation displays two large gables with kneelers and stone gutter spouts, and includes mullioned, transomed, and chamfered three and four-light windows. An 18th or 19th-century barn has been built onto the rear with a full-height segmental archway. The interior of the 16th-century section reveals remnants of a timber frame with stud partitioning, and altered king post roof trusses, potentially incorporating elements of a medieval hall previously on the site.
