Description
This is an archway with gates built around 1887 for Sir James and Lady Hill, located approximately 10 meters northeast of Number 1 on Chellow Lane. It is constructed from ashlar Aishley stone and features wrought-iron gates. The archway has a tall, chamfered, round arch with a stepped buttress-like pier on the northwest side. Above the arch rises an ogee-shaped gable, which includes a raised shield in the tympanum, moulded and gableted coping, and is topped by a representation of a song thrushes' nest, decorated with foliage motifs and reportedly containing two carved birds that are not visible. Inside the archway are two-leaf gates with side panels, the side panels featuring scrolled bars. The gates have flame-finialled dog bars, with the main bars ending in elaborate scrollwork. Above the gates is a rail of reels beneath a top rail that is adorned with scrollwork twists and spirals. On the southeast side, there is a heavy gate-catch on the ground, while the one on the northwest side has been removed. This archway originally served as the entrance to the carriage drive leading to the house of Sir James and Lady Hill, which has since been demolished.
