Description

Ashfield Place comprises a row of fifteen cottages, numbered 1 to 15, dating to approximately 1800 to 1820. This row incorporates an earlier, mid-18th century farmhouse, evidenced by a date plaque of 1754 on number 3. The cottages are constructed of fairly thin sandstone "bricks," with number 11 featuring flush ashlar quoins. They have stone slate roofs. The gable end of number 11 is distinguished by a saddlestone with prominent kneelers. Most cottages have two-light square mullion windows, while numbers 5 and 7 have three-light mullioned windows. Numbers 13 and 15 have smaller, two-light windows on the first floor, set within squared stone frames and featuring common lintels. This is a well-preserved row of dwellings of this type, demonstrating group value.
