Description
The Church of the Holy Trinity was built and endowed by William Rookes of Royds Hall in 1606 and consecrated in 1636. It was originally known as Wibsey Chapel. This simple chapel is constructed from coursed gritstone and features plain, rounded head twin lights. The building underwent significant enlargement and was virtually rebuilt in 1836, with R. H. and S. Sharpe as the architects. The chancel was remodeled in 1883, but it retains the 17th-century east window, which has tracery similar to that of the Old Bell Chapel of 1612 at Thornton. After the alterations in 1836, the church has a shallow view from plan, with broad gabled transepts that include ashlar dressed grouped lancets. The west tower features lancets and a short stone spire. The furnishings were renewed in 1883. In the base of the tower, there are engraved tombstones, mostly from the 17th century, commemorating members of the Rookes family. Additionally, outside and reset in the 1836 work is a sundial with an engraved face dated 1713.
