Description
North Birks Farmhouse and attached barn is a 17th-century farmhouse with early 19th-century alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of coursed sandstone with millstone grit dressings to the original left-hand section, millstone grit to the remainder, an ashlar porch, and partial rear ashlar. It has stone slate roofs.
The two-storey farmhouse has a partial single-storey outshut to the front and a two-storey porch to the left of it. The fenestration is irregular. Quoins are present. The gabled porch features a round-arched doorway with a chamfered, quoined surround, voussoirs, a moulded impost band, and a small square opening above the lintel, further topped by a plaque inscribed 'NMF'. To the right of the porch is an outshut with two four-light, double-chamfered mullioned windows; some mullions have been removed, the left window has a hoodmould, and the right window contains an inserted 19th-century doorway. A later door and a three-light, double-chamfered mullioned window are located to the left of the porch, with another window above. A single-storey addition to the left features quoins, a door, and a window. Four ridge stacks are present.
The rear elevation has two storeys and three first-floor windows, with an oculus. The windows are double-chamfered mullioned; on the ground floor are windows of four, six, two, and two lights, with added two lights; on the first floor are windows of four, four, an oculus with a chamfered surround, and two lights. A continuous dripmould runs across the ground-floor windows.
The barn, located to the right of the farmhouse, is constructed with quoins. It has a central round-arched cart door with quoins, skewbacks, chamfered voussoirs, and a lintel course over the voussoirs. To the right of the cart door is a small square, double-chamfered window, and a later door; to the left is a 19th-century window. Upon entering through the cart door, a doorway with a chamfered, quoined surround and a false-ogee chamfered lintel is on the left, and a blocked doorway with a chamfered, quoined surround is on the right. The rear has opposed round-arched cart doors with stone inscribed 'AH' above.
