Description
Green Lane School is a main school block with an attached water tower and railings, built in 1902. The structure is made of coursed rubble with ashlar dressings and features slate roofs with coped gables and kneelers. It has chamfered eaves, plinth and cill bands, and quoins.
The north front displays a single-storey triple-gabled facade, featuring two central three-light cross mullion windows flanked by three two-light similar windows. There is a chamfered lintel band and two additional bands in the gables, each adorned with a central quatrefoil. The facade is inscribed with 'BOARD SCHOOL 1902'.
On the west front, there is a projecting entrance porch to the north, topped with a tall pyramidal roof. It includes a double door with a two-light mullion overlight, and to the left, a two-light cross mullion window. A low wall with spearhead railings connects to the massive square water tower, which has a deep chamfered band and two tall round-headed lancets on each face, topped by a projecting cornice and parapet.
To the south, there is a single-storey wing with three two-light cross mullion windows, followed by a two-storey range accessed by a ramp. This range has a small projecting porch to the right with a pointed entrance arch, three two-light mullion windows to the left, and four smaller similar windows above. Beyond this is a two-storey block at basement level, featuring four three-light cross mullion windows and four smaller similar windows above.
The south front is two-storey with a slightly projecting gabled cross wing to the right and a four-bay range to the left, which includes four three-light cross mullion windows and a small porch, with four smaller similar windows above. The east front has a two-storey, four-bay projecting corner wing with an attached tall square chimney stack, while the remaining east facade mirrors the west facade. Attached to the north is a low wall with spearhead railings and five sets of gabled gatepiers along the Green Lane frontage.
