Description

The barn and cowhouse at More Hall, dating from the 17th century, is located approximately 40 metres west of the hall. The structure features a cruck framework that was likely reconstructed within 18th-century stonework and was extended in the 19th century. It is partly cruck-framed and constructed from coursed, squared gritstone, with later work that is horizontally tooled, and has a stone slate roof. The building is two storeys high, with a cruck barn that has a three-bay extension to the left, which slopes downhill, and three low outshuts at the rear that also step down the slope.

The uphill section of the barn has large quoins and features boarded cart doors to the right with quoined reveals. To the left, there are three cowhouse doorways, with the outer two in quoined surrounds and shaped lintels, both of which are part-blocked and now serve as windows. The central door has only a lintel above it. There are two dressed circular pitching holes above this section.

In the later downhill part, there are three segmental-arched openings at ground level, all of which are part-blocked. Above these is a circular pitching hole flanked by cruciform vents. The left side of the building has moulded kneelers, gable copings, and an apex finial. The left return features a circular pitching hole to the loft, flanked above by two round-headed windows in ashlar surrounds, which include a ledge, impost blocks, and keyblocks. The lower parts of these openings have pigeon holes, while the upper parts contain casements.

Inside the uphill section, there are three pairs of cruck trusses that are raised high in the wall, featuring similar curved designs with two tie beams, single purlins, wind braces, and a saddle apex, but no ridge. An adjoining farm building to the front right is not of special interest.
