Description

High Storrs School is a boys' and girls' grammar school, later becoming a comprehensive school, constructed in 1933. Designed by W.G. Davies and J.L. Womersley, the Sheffield City Architects, it is built of brick with concrete dressings and renewed pantile roofs, featuring metal framed windows. The architectural style is Stripped Classical, arranged around a double courtyard plan, originally separating boys' and girls' classrooms.

The west front, spanning 25 bays, has a projecting central five-bay block faced in concrete and topped with a parapet rising to a square-headed lantern with an octagonal clock face. The central bay features glazed double doors with an overlight and a balcony above. A projecting porch with a moulded surround, displaying the city coat of arms, provides access to glazed double doors with an overlight. Flanking this are triple bays delineated by giant composite pilasters. Further out are single-storey gyms at each end, each with a three-bay portico and three-bay side facades. The eastern entrance front mirrors the west, with a central two-storey entrance flanked by octagonal metal lamps, and smaller entrances similarly flanked.

The interior retains numerous original Art Deco details, including glazed doors and staircases with metal balustrades. Classrooms generally feature fitted glazed cupboards and fitted blackboards with shelving. The music room has high fitted panelled cupboards. The Allibone library and Assembly hall boasts a stage with a moulded proscenium arch and incorporates giant pilasters, a coffered ceiling, and six fine metal octagonal lanterns. Staff and sixth form common rooms have pilasters decorated in an Art Deco style.
