Description
This is a 19th-century milepost located approximately 40 metres south-east of the junction with Penistone Road in Ecclesfield. Made by Brayshaw and Booth of Liversedge, it is constructed from cast iron and fixed to a gritstone pillar. The milepost features angled sides beneath a round-headed panel. The raised lettering on the upper panel indicates the directions to Rotherham, Wortley & Four Lane Ends, and Barnes Green. The left panel shows the distance to Rotherham as 7 miles and Chapeltown, though the lower part is buried. The right panel states that Penistone is 7¼ miles away. There is a crack across the upper part of the milepost.
