Description
Barnes Hall is a large house dating from the early 19th century, with a later 19th-century wing at the rear. The main part of the house is constructed from ashlar sandstone, with a Welsh slate roof and a central flat section covered in lead. It has a symmetrical facade of five bays. The central entrance features part-glazed double doors set within deep, shaped reveals, beneath a semicircular stone porch supported by two Doric columns and matching pilasters, with a plain frieze and cornice including decorative mutules. The ground floor has sash windows with glazing bars, projecting sills, and eared architraves and cornices. Similar sash windows are on the first floor, but without cornices. There is an eaves cornice and blocking course. Three ashlar chimney stacks are arranged in a line. The left return features two bays similar to the right, and to the left, a well-matched five-bay wing, set back. The right return has three bays belonging to the main range. The rear of the later wing is set back and largely rebuilt. A small single-story extension to the wing is not of architectural interest.
