Description

Nether Green Middle School is a board school, built in 1904 by Holmes & Watson for the Sheffield School Board, and completed in 1909 by AF Watson. Later alterations occurred in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, topped with a slate roof. A prominent feature is the octagonal wooden bell turret with a dome and flagstaff.

The school has a plinth and coped gables, along with various coped side wall and ridge stacks. The main block is two storeys high, with a symmetrical front elevation featuring a central double-gabled single-storey projection with round-topped gables. These gables contain three-light windows with overlights, separated by pilasters that extend to the gable tops. The central light has a round-arched tympanum with a keystone and voussoirs. To either side of the projection are smaller projections with catslide roofs, each housing a single late 20th-century window. Behind the central projection is a hall with a facing gable topped by the bell turret, which has a circular opening. A large segment-headed five-light window with a hoodmould is set within the gable. Flanking the central hall are square bell towers, two stages high, with quoins, a moulded string course, and a wavy-topped coped parapet. The lower stage of each tower has a single small window, while the bell stage features two louvred openings in the form of a Diocletian window, featuring large keystones. An external corner stack is present on the right tower. Further projecting wings are located to either side, with two-light glazing bar windows with pedimented label moulds. The windows in the left gable are smaller. The returns of the building show a through-eaves dormer with a segmental pediment and a transomed two-light casement, flanked by single-light windows. Gables with three single-light windows are also present on either side. Towards the front is a two-storey range with a through-eaves dormer and five small windows below.

The interior features a central hall with pilaster buttresses and a queen post truss roof with wavy arch braces and struts. E Holmes, in partnership with AF Watson from 1893 to 1906, designed several schools for the Sheffield School Board, and this is considered the most striking of these.
