Description
The lodge and adjoining boundary walls at St George's Hospital, formerly known as the Borough Fever Hospital, were built between 1876 and 1882 and feature mid-20th century alterations. Designed by S.L. Swann, the structure is made of red brick with blue brick and ashlar dressings, topped with a single coped brick ridge and external gable stacks, showcasing a Gothic Revival style. The building has a plinth and string courses and is two stories high with a two-window range in an L-plan layout.
The main gable, located to the left, displays an elaborate traceried bargeboard that forms a round arch. It features two segmental pointed plain sash windows. Below this, there is a square wooden bay window with a hipped slate roof and a cast-iron crest, which contains three plain sash windows. To the right, there is a set-back bay with a gabled through-eaves dormer that has a reglazed plain sash. Below this bay, a mid-20th century lean-to glazed porch connects to the partly rebuilt boundary wall. The right gable mirrors the main gable's bargeboard and includes an external gable stack.
The interior was not inspected. The boundary wall, which encloses three sides of the square site, is made of panelled brick and features a plinth and dentilled heads on the panels. The section along Winter Street has stepped moulded ashlar coping, while the returns have stepped flat coping. Square corner piers with dentilled heads and swept pyramidal caps are also present. Adjacent to the lodge are two similar outer gate piers and convex curved flanking walls, with the right wall altered. Additionally, there is a smaller gateway with square piers. The building was vacant at the time of the survey.
