Description

The lodge with an attached wall and wash house at Intake Cemetery was built in 1879 by Innocent & Brown for the Gleadless Burial Board. It features coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof with a central coped ridge stack, designed in an L-plan. The building has a chamfered plinth and an impost band, standing two storeys tall with one bay on each side. Most windows are mid-20th century wooden cross casements.

The east front displays a half-hipped gable with a stepped string course, deep eaves, and a bargeboard, topped with a square wooden bell turret that has wooden balusters and a pyramidal roof with a finial. The central first-floor cross casement has an ogee lintel and is flanked by wooden posts on corbels that support the turret. Below this, to the left, is a 20th-century door with an overlight, and to the right is another cross casement.

The left side facing Mansfield Road features a projecting gable on the right with a traceried bargeboard and a louvred ventilator at the peak. The central cross casement has an ogee lintel, while to the right is a tall round-headed recess with a hoodmould linked to the string course, which has a shouldered single casement above and a smaller casement below the transom. To the left, there is another cross casement. The rear gable has a double cross casement, with three smaller windows below it.

The exterior includes two walls with gabled rubble coping, which are connected to a single-storey wash house featuring wooden brackets on the gables, three doors, and a small window. The interior has not been inspected.
