Description

Sylvester Works is a cutlery works, built around 1875 for Joseph Elliot & Sons, Ltd. The building is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a gabled and hipped slate roof, featuring two side wall stacks and a single ridge stack set diagonally.

The exterior features sill and impost bands, with the first floor band incorporating brick dentillation, and a gutter supported by wooden brackets. The bays are divided by pilaster strips. The building is three storeys high and has a seven-by-five window arrangement on its corner site, which has an obtuse angle. Most windows are plain sashes, with those on the second floor having segmental heads.

The Sylvester Street front has an off-centre entrance bay flanked by panelled pilasters and topped with a shouldered gable and finial. On the first floor is a segment-headed double sash with a central shaft, flanked by two sashes to the left and four to the right. Above this, a similar window with flat heads, and above that a round-arched panel inscribed "Sylvester Works", surmounted by a curved sign reading "Cutlers". To the left are two sashes, and to the right, four sashes. On the ground floor, an ashlar doorcase with a cornice and pilasters leads to a panelled door with a shouldered overlight, flanked by two sashes to the left and four to the right.

The rounded corner to the left features a single, smaller sash on each floor. The left return has smaller windows in a similar style, with a blank window on each floor to the right. On the ground floor, to the left, is a segment-headed cart entrance with a keystone and board doors displaying the firm’s name, alongside two windows to its right. The interior has not been inspected. Sylvester Works represents a large-scale, integrated cutlery manufacturing facility.
