Description
Gibson Works, formerly Crescent Works, is a late 19th-century metal works, built in phases. It is located on St Mary's Road and Mary Street in Sheffield. The building is constructed primarily of red brick with stone dressings, slate roofs, and brick end stacks. It has a rectangular courtyard plan and is generally two and three storeys high.
The St Mary's Road elevation is two storeys high. The ground floor features sash windows with plain stone lintels and cills, an entrance doorway with a rendered surround and stone heads to pilasters, and a rectangular overlight. A section of windows has been concealed by a modern metal roller shutter. The first floor has a row of plate glass sash windows with continuous stone lintels and cills. The Mary Street elevation is three storeys high, with a ground floor containing an inserted loading door, four-pane windows with segmental brick heads and stone cills, a cart entrance with iron railing gates, a doorway, and further four-pane windows. The first floor has fourteen four-pane windows with segmental brick heads and stone cills, and the second floor has a similar number of windows set immediately beneath the eaves. Courtyard ranges to the east and west are three storeys high, featuring mainly two-light windows; the east range has small-paned casements and the west range has sash windows, both with continuous cills and segmental brick heads. Two single-storey brick blocks form a T-plan within the courtyard. The interior includes offices and potential warehousing along the front range facing St Mary's Road, with workshops in the ranges behind.
