Description
Stumperlowe House, now divided into two houses, dates from the late 17th century and was remodeled in the early 19th century, with alterations and additions made in the late 20th century. The building features a large mid-19th century addition on the left. It is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings and has stone slate and artificial slate roofs, which include two gable stacks and a single side wall stack. The design is in the Tudor Revival style.
The exterior showcases a chamfered plinth, quoins, and coped gables with kneelers. The house has two storeys plus attics and a five-window range, arranged in a double range plan. There are five wooden cross casements with label moulds, and above them are two large through-eaves dormers featuring two-light Gothic casements with hoodmoulds. The central entrance is a square crenellated porch with a four-centred arched opening and pointed side lights, which shelters a half-glazed four-centred arched door with an overlight. Flanking the porch are two larger wooden cross casements with label moulds.
To the right, there is a set-back two-storey addition with a single window that includes a cross casement, and below it is a large canted flat-roofed conservatory from the 20th century. The mid-19th century addition, now known as Stumperlowe Grange, has two storeys plus garrets and a three-window range. It features a half-hipped stone slate roof with a single ridge and side wall stacks, as well as patterned verge boards. The front-facing end includes a two-storey canted bay window with a hipped roof and three margin light sashes on each floor, and above this are two small round-headed sashes. The left return has a blank gable to the right with two small plain sashes in the garret. The interior has not been inspected.
