Description
The Sheffield War Memorial is located 25 meters south of City Hall and is aligned with it in the pedestrianised Barker’s Pool. The memorial features a large flagstaff approximately 25 meters high, topped with a gilded bronze orb and crown, and it rises from an ornate octagonal bronze base.
At the base of the flagstaff is a substantial bronze collar that displays the dates 1914/1918 and 1939/1945 in relief. This collar is supported by an orb surrounded by acanthus leaves. The upper section of the base includes four life-sized figures of soldiers, each holding reversed rifles, positioned between scroll buttresses. The middle section consists of an octagonal pedestal adorned with floral swags. Four coats of arms representing the three armed services and the city are displayed on the north, south, east, and west sides.
The skirting panels at the base feature eight regimental badges, including those of the Yorkshire Dragoons (Queen’s Own), Royal Artillery, Royal Engineers, Machine Gun Corps, Tank Corps, York and Lancaster Regiment, Medical Corps, and the Royal Army Service Corps. The entire structure is set on a splayed octagonal stone plinth, surrounded by a circular paved area.
