Description
This is an L-shaped farmbuilding located approximately 20 metres north of the farmhouse at Bassingthorpe Farm. It is a combination farmbuilding with a timber-framed core that likely dates back to the early 17th century, encased in the late 17th century, while the taller range was probably added in the early 18th century. The building features some internal timber-framing, rubble sandstone, and roofs made of Welsh slate and sheet asbestos.
The farmbuilding has a tall, single-storey, 4 1/2-bay range that is attached to a lower, partly two-storey, 3-bay timber-framed structure. Both ranges have large quoins. On the farmyard side, the lower range on the right has three doorways, with the central door featuring an overlight and a casement window to the right. There is a small casement window on the first floor to the right, which has glazing bars above an open slot that provides access to a dovecote within. An exposed part of the wall post is visible on the far left. The right return displays the surround of a 17th-century mullioned window that has been walled up, with the dripstone cut away, and a small gable opening with a ledge.
The taller range on the left has large double doors beneath a wooden lintel and blocked slit vents, topped by an asbestos roof. Inside the lower range, there are six wall posts with straight braces supporting three principal rafter trusses, and well-squared purlins. The truss nearest the angle of the range features a soffit-morticed tie beam. The opposite end truss retains original stud infill above and below the tie beam, and the end bay beyond this truss has a later dovecote in the loft with brick nesting holes. The taller range contains principal-rafter trusses with massive tie beams and raking struts supporting double purlins. There is a derelict outbuilding in the angle of the plan and an added garage on the left return of the taller range, which are not of special interest.
