Description

The Walker Mausoleum, likely built in the early 19th century for the Walker family, is a small, square, single-storey structure made of ashlar sandstone with a graduated slate roof. It is situated within a much-altered enclosure that still features end piers at the front and obelisks at the corners. The mausoleum has a plinth and projecting quoins, with simple freestanding urns flanking a renewed six-panel door set in an architrave. This architrave is supported by plain consoles beneath a solid, shallow pediment. The building has a moulded eaves cornice with antefixae and a blocking course that peaks over the door, which is adorned with the Walker emblem carved in relief. The hipped roof has renewed ridge tiles, and there is a window in an architrave with closed shutters on each side. The left return features an ashlar blocking course and antefixae.

Inside, although not available for inspection, the mausoleum retains memorial tablets dedicated to the Walker family. The square piers flanking the front door have moulded plinths, monolithic shafts, and gable-shaped caps. Plain iron railings connect to corner obelisks set on pedestals that match the piers. It is uncertain if this structure is the 'Monument to our good father' erected in 1784 by the family of Samuel Walker, as suggested by J. Guest in his 1879 work, Historic Notices of Rotherham, though its style appears to be later.
