Description
The doorway re-erected in the rock face approximately 100 metres southeast of Boston Castle is an early to mid-17th century feature that was moved in the 19th century. It has a limestone architrave and aedicule set within a brick panel. The bolection-moulded architrave is infilled with brickwork and flanked by panelled pilasters that have plinth blocks and acanthus-carved consoles. Above is a heavy, moulded, segmental pediment with springers that break forward. This doorway is an important relic associated with the College of Jesus buildings, which were converted into a mansion in the 17th century. An early illustration shows this doorway as one of a pair set within a ruin.
