Description
Swinton Hall, now divided into eight dwellings, was built in the late 18th or early 19th century, with significant alterations in the 20th century. The house is constructed of dressed sandstone with a 20th-century cement-tile roof. It has a rectangular, double-depth plan. The main range is three storeys high, with a two-storey addition to the former garden front. The entrance front originally had seven bays. It now features 20th-century casement windows with glazing bars, and glazed tiles on projecting sills, beneath plain lintels. The original entrance front has a cement-rendered plinth and projecting ashlar quoins, with the ground floor partially rendered. The central three-bay section features a 20th-century door with overlight, flanked by two tall windows. Above, there are three tall windows on the first floor, with a cornice over the central window. The outer bays have windows on each of the three floors. A recessed ashlar side wall of the added loggia is visible on the right.
The main range has a cornice that forms a gutter; the roof is hipped to the left and has gable copings with a truncated end stack to the right. The right return features a Doric loggia, tetrastyle in antis, set on a raised pavement. The central doorway within the loggia has a plain projecting surround and cornice, with a 20th-century glazed porch on the right considered of no special interest. On the first floor, clasping pilaster strips flank five tall windows, topped by a cornice to a flat roof. Above this, set back, are the twin gables of the main range.
