Description
The River Don Wharf, located opposite the west end of Quay Road, is a river wharf that was likely enhanced to its current form in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from dressed gritstone and features a substantial retaining wall with offset bands and heavy stone copings that are connected by iron cramps. There is a central recess with stone steps leading down, and one side wall is inscribed with the line and words 'LEVEL AT STAINFORTH'. This wharf is situated on the old course of the River Don, which has since been canalised to the west, and it served as a port of considerable importance in the area.
