Description

A group of three houses, dated 1908, designed by Percy Houfton for the Brodsworth Colliery Company as part of the Woodlands colliery village. The houses are constructed of red brick to the ground floor, now mostly rendered, with roughcast above and a later cement-tile roof. The arrangement is near-symmetrical, with a window arrangement of 1 : 1 : 2 : 1 : 1 on the first floor. Wooden casement windows with glazing bars are present throughout.

Number 51, the central house, features a boarded front door beneath a canopy supported on curved brackets. It has windows of 4 lights to the left and 3 lights to the right of the door; a continuous tile dripcourse runs above these windows. The first floor has two 4-light windows, with a tile dripcourse beneath a gable featuring a lozenge motif.

Number 53 (on the left) has a similar doorway on the left-hand side of a canted 2-storey bay. The bay has windows of 2 : 2 : 2 lights and vertical studding between floors. To the left of the door is a 3-light window below a 4-light window. Number 49 (on the right) is similarly designed but “handed”, meaning the features are mirrored.

The buildings have swept eaves. There are dentilled brick end stacks corbelled from the gables, with the stack to the right having been altered. Two matching ridge stacks are also present.
