Description

1 and 2 Clay Lane West are a pair of semi-detached houses built in 1867, designed by J Butterfield for Doncaster Corporation. Constructed from red brick with ashlar dressing and slate roofs, these two-storey houses each have two bays with mirrored facades.

No 1, on the right, features a slightly off-centre four-panelled door with a pointed overlight, which is deeply recessed behind a chamfered four-centred arch. To the right of the door is a narrow sash window with a chamfered stone sill and lintel, while to the left is a three-light timber mullion window with two-pane sashes in a similar surround. Above, there is a two-light window in the bargeboarded gable, and the rest of the first floor is blind with overhanging eaves. A large T-plan ridge stack with a dentilled top is present, along with a similar two-light window on the first floor of the right return. All windows below are set beneath pointed brick relieving arches.

The rear elevation has a gabled bay on the right that breaks forward, featuring a porch in the re-entrant angle. This porch has brick four-centred arches on both sides and a panelled door with a pointed overlight behind it. The windows at the rear are similar to those at the front. The interior is simple, with a stick baluster staircase.

No 2 is identical to No 1, but mirrored. These houses were built as a pair with Nos. 3 and 4 and are listed for their historic interest as very early examples of council housing. At the time of the resurvey, the buildings were empty and derelict but were refurbished in the early 21st century.
