Description
The Burghwallis War Memorial commemorates those who served in the First and Second World Wars. It was built in 1922 by an unknown designer and is made of Portland stone, with limestone enclosing walls.
The memorial features a Celtic wheel cross set on a tall, slightly tapering rectangular shaft, which stands on a two-stepped plinth. The cross is positioned on a rectangular, tooled plinth atop the shaft. The front of the cross is smoother and adorned with interwoven Celtic patterns, while the sides and back are more heavily tooled. The rectangular shaft includes two smoother panels on the front face, which display a dedication and a list of names in applied lead lettering. The top panel reads: 'TO / THE GLORY OF GOD AND / THE EVERLASTING HONOUR / OF THE MEN OF / BURGHWALLIS / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918'. The lower panel lists the names of the men and their military units. On the left side of the shaft, there is a tall, smoother panel dedicated to the Second World War, also featuring names in applied lead lettering.
The memorial is set on a roughly triangular, raised platform at a fork in the road, with enclosing walls made of roughly coursed limestone that curve around to form planters on either side of the gateway. The double metal gates are decorated with roundels featuring poppies. Additionally, there is a timber flagpole located on the east side of the platform.
