Description
Nos. 4-9 Christchurch Terrace is a terrace of six early 19th century houses situated on Thorne Road. The houses are primarily of red brick, with Nos. 6, 8 and 9 rendered, and have stone and stucco dressings, set beneath slate roofs. Each house is three storeys high, generally two bays wide, though No. 9 has a single bay to the front and three bays to the left return.
The houses have plinths, and the doorcases are situated to the left of each house (except No. 9), all featuring radial glazed overlights below keyed cambered arches with incised voussoirs. The original panelled doors remain at Nos. 4, 5, 6 and 7, while No. 8 has a 20th-century replacement. Nos. 4, 5, and 7 have twelve-pane sashes below similar arches to the right. No. 6 has a large, early 20th-century, five-sided canted bay window with upper leaded lights and bracketed cornice, and No. 8 features a square bay window in a similar style. No. 9 has central plate glass sash below a similar cambered arch. A continuous bracketed first-floor balcony with alternating wavy and stick balusters runs along the fronts of all houses except No. 9. Full-height first-floor openings are present in all houses, set within stucco cambered arches with incised voussoirs and keystones.
Nos. 4, 5, 6, and 7 have unequal fifteen-pane sashes, with the left bay of No. 6 blocked. No. 8 has unequal plate glass sashes, and No. 9 has a 20th-century casement. Above these openings are smaller openings with projecting sills. Nos. 4, 5, and 6 retain unequal nine-pane sashes, with the left bay of No. 6 blocked, while Nos. 7, 8 and 9 have 20th-century windows within the original openings. Brick and rendered ridge stacks are visible. The roof is hipped to the left.
The left return of No. 9 has steps leading to a central six-panelled door with a radial glazed overlight, a plate glass sash to the right, and 20th-century casements to the left. Above a plain sill band, there are two plate glass sashes to the right and centre, and a blind opening to the right. Above these, there's a central 20th-century window flanked by blind openings, all contained within cambered stucco arches with incised voussoirs and keystones. Continuous spear-headed finial railings run along the fronts of Nos. 4 to 8.
