Description
Groves Chapel, now offices, was built between 1881 and 1884 by WJ Morley of Bradford, and is dated 1883 on its frieze. The building is constructed of light red brick with sandstone dressings, and has a slate roof. The front facade, facing Clarence Street, has two storeys and four bays, with the two central bays projecting and topped by a pediment. A twin arched porch contains paired doors with fanlights, resting on detached columns and featuring keyed archivolts. Segment-headed windows with apron panels are flanked by this porch. The upper floor features large round-arched windows with shaped glazing, set within keyed architraves and framed by pilasters and an entablature bearing the inscription "WESLEYAN 1883 CHAPEL". A pediment above this section has an oculus and decorative features. Side windows are plainer, with urns on corner pedestals. The roof is hipped with ridge vents. The returns of the side elevations share a similar style, with windows, a first-floor string course, and an entablature. A lower, single-bay, rear extension is also present. Internally, the chapel features a large, open preaching box and a gallery running around three sides. The panelled ceiling has a deeply-coved cornice and ornamented central areas. A partitioned-off pulpit area, choir benches, and a large organ with an arcaded, panelled console framed in fluted pilasters and an entablature are also present. Good-quality panelled woodwork is found throughout the interior, and the heads of the windows are filled with painted glass.
