Description
The building is a dovecote, now serving as a wine cellar, located approximately 50 metres southeast of Middlethorpe Hall. It dates from the late 17th century and was restored around 1980. The structure is made of red brick in English garden wall bond and features a timber landing platform and timber guttering supported by scrolled cast-iron spikes. The roof is pyramidal, covered with tiles, and topped with a timber and glass lantern that has a lead ogee roof.
The dovecote is square in plan and has two storeys. On the west side, there is a 20th-century board door with a segmental brick arch above it. A broad brick band runs between the two storeys, and the eaves are enclosed by the landing platform, which is supported by shaped brackets and features a single row of dove holes. The roof is finished with an octagonal lantern that has diamond lattice glazing. Inside, the walls are lined to full height with nesting boxes.
