Description
Middlethorpe Manor is a house that originated in the late 17th century, with extensions added in the late 18th century and mid 19th century, as well as further alterations around 1900 and in the 20th century. The building is constructed of stucco on a shallow stone plinth, featuring a boldly projecting moulded timber cornice. It has hipped slate roofs with stucco stacks and three box dormers on the central range.
The exterior is two storeys high and consists of a three-window central range that is set back between a three-window wing on the left and a two-window wing on the right. A gabled porch projects from the centre of the central range, flanked by an unequal sash window on the left and a 16-pane sash window on the right. On the first floor, the central window is a 12-pane sash, while the outer windows are tripartite sashes. The left wing has sash windows on both floors, with one 20th-century two-light window on the ground floor that is out of line with the others. The right wing features 12-pane sash windows with stone sills on each floor, one of which is a dummy on the first floor. The right return has two bays, with the left bay being a full-height semicircular bow. The ground floor of the bow includes French doors between sash windows, all of which are 12-pane sashes.
The interior has not been inspected, but records indicate that the ground floor entrance hall is lined with panelling in two heights and features two fireplaces—one with a brown marble surround and rococo frieze, and the other with a carved and enriched architrave. The south-east room contains a fireplace with Corinthian pilasters. The staircase has a moulded string, heavy turned balusters, and foliated volutes at the foot. On the first floor, the landing has a panelled dado and three-panel doors. Some rooms in the central range and the late 18th-century wing retain original fireplaces and cornices, while rooms in the mid 19th-century wing maintain contemporary fittings.
