Description

No. 33 Bootham is a house built between 1752 and 1755 by builder Robert Clough. It is constructed of brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and features an 'M' roof that is slated at the front and pantiled at the rear. The building has three storeys plus an attic and consists of four bays. The facade includes a plinth, ground and first floor sill bands, two-storey bands, and a timber cornice gutter. The windows are glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick flat arches. The right-hand window on the ground floor, as well as those on the second floor, has exposed sash boxes and is likely a reconstruction. On the left side, there is a 20th-century flat-roofed attic dormer. The third bay features an early 19th-century doorcase with pilasters that have sunken panels and a pediment. The door itself has eight raised and fielded panels, and the overlight is plain and rectangular. There are gable chimneys.

The interior has not been inspected, but it has been recorded that it contains a main staircase with three balusters to each tread, which is swept at the foot of the stair in a cluster around the newel. There is a staircase window flanked by Roman Doric pilasters, with decorated plasterwork above. The servants' staircase has closed strings, turned balusters, and square newels.
