House. 1752-1755. Erected by Robert Clough (builder). Brick in Flemish bond with painted stone dressings and an 'M' roof which is slated at the front and pantiled at the rear. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys plus attic and 4 bays. The facade has a plinth, ground and first floor sill bands, 2 storey bands, and a timber cornice gutter. The windows are glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick flat arches. The right-hand window on the ground floor, like those on the 2nd floor, has exposed sash boxes and is probably a reconstruction. Towards the left there is a C20 flat-roofed attic dormer. The 3rd bay contains an early C19 doorcase which has pilasters with sunken panels and a pediment. The door has 8 raised and fielded panels and the overlight is plain and rectangular. Gable chimneys. INTERIOR: not inspected. Recorded by RCHM as containing a main staircase which has 3 balusters to each tread, swept at the foot of the stair in a cluster round the newel, and a staircase window flanked by Roman Doric Pilasters, with decorated plasterwork above. The servants' staircase was recorded an having closed strings, turned balusters, and square newels.
