Description
Naburn Lock consists of a pair of locks built in 1757 and 1887-89. The engineer John Fowler and the contractors Nelson and Co. were responsible for the construction of the New Lock for Ouse Navigation. The locks feature ashlar walls along with timber and cast-iron gates, bridges, and winding gear. Each lock has a central island with pointed ends and ashlar sides, which include two pairs of plank gates topped with walkways. Some walkways have clews made by Adams Hydraulics Ltd. from York and London, and are supported by stanchions with chains in between. There is a cast-iron swing bridge with a lattice parapet on each bank, and each lock is equipped with eight pairs of winches, with one winch designated for opening the gate. The Old Lock and the nearby dam were constructed at a cost of £10,000, while the New Lock, along with its offices and workshops, was built at a cost of £14,098.
